January 20

January 20, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 46, 47, and 48 and Matthew 14:22-36. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 46:

  • List Jacob's sons, and list the number of sons each of them had.

Genesis 47:

  • How many times did Jacob bless Pharaoh?
  • List Joseph's program for feeding people when their money ran out.
  • Describe Joseph's planting program.

Genesis 48:

  • List the events of Jacob's blessing of Joseph's sons.

Matthew 14:22-36:

  • List all that Jesus did in these verses.

January 19, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 44 and 45 and Matthew 14:1-21. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 44:

  • List what Joseph told his servant to do to his brothers.
  • List what the brothers' response was to the servant's accusation.
  • Write out what Judah offered instead (v. 33). {Note the significance that Judah is the 4th son born to Joseph and that he is the brother who offered to be the sacrifice for his younger brother Benjamin. Jesus comes from a line that stems from Judah. See Matthew 1:2-3.]
Genesis 45:
  • List what Joseph told his brothers.
  • Summarize what Joseph and Pharaoh gave Joseph's brothers.
Matthew 14:1-21:
  • List what happened to John the Baptist in the order of events.
  • List the things that Jesus did before he feed the 5,000 people.

January 18, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 42 and 43 and Matthew 13:33-58. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 42:
  • List Joseph's conditions in order for his brothers to buy grain.
  • List what Joseph gave his brothers.
  • Aside from Joseph, three of Jacob's sons are named in this chapter. Name them (one is the youngest). Refer back to your lists from January 12 and see the significance of these three and why Joseph asked his brothers to return with the youngest.
Genesis 43:
  • Which brother offered to bear the blame if Benjamin did not return from Egypt?
  • List the gifts that Jacob sent back to Egypt with his sons.
  • List the seating arrangements at Joseph's meal.
Matthew 13:33-58:
  • List the meanings of the following words in Jesus's parable of weeds (v. 33-42):
    • farmer
    • good seed
    • field
    • weeds
    • enemy
    • harvest
    • harvesters
  • List the three other parables that Jesus told.
  • Write out what Jesus said in verse 57.

January 17, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 41 and Matthew 13:1-32. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 41:

  • List descriptions of the two dreams that Pharaoh had along with Joseph's interpretation.
  • List Joseph's suggestion about how to prepare for the famine.
  • List all of Pharaoh's gifts and appointments bestowed on Joseph.
  • List the names of Joseph's two sons.

Matthew 13:1-32:

  • Draw a vertical line down the center of the page and a horizontal line across the page so that four squares are formed.
  • In each box, list each of the dispositions of the various seeds that Jesus spoke about in the parable of the seeds in verses 1-9.
  • Write out the first part of verse 12.
  • Draw two vertical lines down the page. Label the left column "Jesus," the center column "People," and the right column "Disciples."
  • In each column, list the appropriate descriptions for Jesus, the people, and his disciples from verses 14-17.
  • Describe the hearts, ears, and eyes of the people and the result of that (from verse 15).
  • Draw another vertical line down the center of the page and another horizontal line across the page so that four squares are formed.
  • In each box, list Jesus's explanation of the various seeds. Your boxes should line up with the first four boxes you listed above.
  • Summarize verses 24-29 in one sentence.

January 16, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 38, 39, & 40 and Matthew 12:22-50. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 38:

  • List Judah's three sons and briefly describe each of their fates as it pertains to Tamar.
  • List the pledge items that Tamar required of Judah.
  • List Tamar's two sons, who was born first, and what the midwife did.
Genesis 39:

  • List all of Joseph's responsibilities for Potiphar.
  • List all the blessings the Lord bestowed on Potiphar as a result of Joseph.
  • List Joseph's responsibilities for the chief jailor.
  • List the Lord's blessings bestowed as a result of Joseph.
Genesis 40:
  • Draw a vertical line down the paper. Label the left column "Dream" and the right column "Interpretation."
  • In the appropriate columns, write about the cupbearer's dream.
  • In the appropriate columns, write about the baker's dream.
Matthew 12:22-50

  • List who Jesus healed and what the Pharisees' response was.
  • Write out v. 30.
  • Write out v. 35.
  • Write out v. 50.

January 15, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 36 & 37 and Matthew 12:1-21. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 36: Chapter 36 contains a listing of Essau's descendants.

  • List the names of each of Essau's wives and the number of sons and grandchildren of each.
  • Verses 20-43 lists the names of other tribes, clans, or kings. List what is being recorded here in general.

Genesis 37:

  • Draw a vertical line down the center of the page. Label the left column "Joseph" and the right column "Brothers."
  • Describe the things that Joseph would do to his brothers in the left column.
  • List each evil thing that Joseph's brothers did to Joseph or Joseph's father.

Matthew 12:1-21:

  • Draw a vertical line down the center of the page. Label the left column "Jesus" and the right column "Pharisees."
  • List in the appropriate columns what Jesus said or did and the Pharisee's responses or questions.
  • Write out the last part of verse 7.
  • Write out the last part of verse 12.

January 14, 2011: The readings for today are: Genesis 33, 34, & 35 and Matthew 11. Here are some lists for the reader to contemplate while reading.

Genesis 33:
  • List each family group as Jacob arranged them in the order he put them.
Genesis 34: Leah's daughter Dinah is raped by a local prince, who afterwards asked permission to marry Dinah.
  •  List briefly each condition Dinah's brothers stated in order to approve the marriage.
  • List all the things Simeon (son #2) and Levi (son #3) did to the townspeople.
  • What did Jacob say about his sons' actions?
Genesis 35:
  • List God's blessings to Jacob (v. 9-13).
  • List Jacob's 12 sons.
    • Circle the oldest son, who slept with Jacob's concubine.
    • Underline the two sons who slaughtered and pillaged to avenge their sister Dinah.
    • Draw a box around Jacob's fourth son.
Matthew 11:
  • List the things Jesus told John the Baptist's disciples as his answer to the question of whether Jesus was the Messiah.
  • Draw a vertical line down the center of the page. Label the left column "John the Baptist" and the right column "Jesus."
  • In the appropriate column, list the complaints made about John the Baptist and Jesus. Note the contrasts.
  • Write out the last part of verse 19
  • List the major components of verses 25-28, of what Jesus will do, and how we should be. Turn these verses into statements of purpose or rules we should follow.
