March 17, 2011

Today is St. Patrick's Day, the patron saint of Ireland. Although born in Scotland of Roman parents living in Britain and in charge of the colonies, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave shepherd for six years. He escaped and returned to his family and was ordained for the priesthood and later bishop, when he was sent to Ireland. There Patrick converted tribal chieftain among thousands of others and built churches all over the country in the span of forty years. He is reputed as using the shamrock as an explanation of the Trinity. He died at Saul, which was where he had built the first church in Ireland.
